James Milner Signs One-Year Brighton Extension, Eyes Premier League Appearance Record at 40

James Milner will extend his remarkable Premier League journey after signing a one-year contract extension with Brighton & Hove Albion. The 39-year-old midfielder, who joined the Seagulls in the summer of 2023 after leaving Liverpool, will now head into his 24th season in the English top flight.

Milner made just four league appearances last season due to a thigh injury picked up against Arsenal in August. Despite limited game time, Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler praised Milner’s impact behind the scenes.

“His experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players,” Hürzeler said. “He’s a great guy to have in our environment, and I’m really pleased we’ll have him with us again this season.”

With 638 Premier League games under his belt, Milner is just 16 short of Gareth Barry’s all-time record of 653 appearances. If fit and selected, the versatile veteran has a realistic chance to break the record during the 2025/26 campaign.

Milner’s longevity is unmatched. Since debuting for Leeds United at 16 in 2002, he has gone on to play for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool, winning multiple major honours and earning 61 England caps.

He turns 40 in January 2026 and could also be in contention to become the Premier League’s oldest-ever outfield player. That record is currently held by Teddy Sheringham, who played at 40 years and 272 days.

Though he couldn’t contribute much on the pitch last season, Milner’s leadership and professionalism continue to be valued highly by the Brighton camp. With another year added to his legendary career, all eyes will be on him as he chases history.
