PSV Eindhoven won the Dutch Eredivisie title for the 26th time after beating Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 on Sunday.
PSV Eindhoven have been crowned Eredivisie champions for the 2024/25 season, securing their 26th Dutch league title after a tense 3-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on the final day of the campaign. The win capped off a rollercoaster season for Peter Bosz’s side, who had to overcome both a late challenge from rivals Ajax and the pressure of a must-win situation in their last match.
Going into the final weekend, PSV held a narrow one-point lead over Ajax, knowing that only a victory would guarantee them the title. Their mission took them to Het Kasteel, home of Sparta Rotterdam, where they needed to hold their nerve under immense pressure.
The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when veteran winger Ivan Perisic fired PSV ahead, providing a crucial early cushion. However, the lead was short-lived. Sparta responded early in the second half with a goal from Gjivai Zechiel, who momentarily derailed PSV’s title hopes and handed Ajax a virtual lead in the standings, as the Amsterdam side led comfortably at home to FC Twente.
PSV, though, showed resilience and determination. Just minutes after the equaliser, Luuk de Jong, one of the club’s most consistent performers, struck from close range to put the visitors back in control. The tension remained high until the closing stages when Malik Tillman unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box in the 84th minute, effectively sealing the win and sparking jubilant celebrations among PSV supporters.
With this result, PSV ended the season on 79 points, just one ahead of Ajax, who finished second despite a 2-0 victory on the final day. The title race had swung dramatically in the closing months of the season. At one point, Ajax had built a nine-point lead and looked destined to reclaim the crown. However, a series of dropped points allowed PSV to mount a late surge, winning their final seven league matches to clinch back-to-back championships.
This triumph marks the fourth time since the turn of the century that PSV have retained the Eredivisie title. Their previous title doubles came in 2000–01, 2005–08 (four in a row), and 2015–16. Interestingly, the 2016 title also came after Ajax squandered their lead on the final day—drawing away at De Graafschap to hand PSV the championship. This year’s story mirrored that collapse, with Ajax once again letting a comfortable lead slip away in the final stretch.
Under the leadership of head coach Peter Bosz, PSV have displayed both attacking flair and mental strength throughout the season. The likes of Luuk de Jong and Malik Tillman played key roles in the title push, while experienced players such as Ivan Perisic added valuable depth and leadership.
This 26th Eredivisie title places PSV just ten behind Ajax’s record haul of 36. While Ajax remain the most decorated club in Dutch football history, PSV’s recent consistency and ability to perform in high-stakes matches is a testament to their strong squad management and tactical discipline under Bosz.
The campaign will be remembered not just for PSV’s triumph, but also for the drama and unpredictability of the title race. In a league often dominated by a few powerhouses, this season provided a refreshing narrative twist, full of comebacks, pressure-filled moments, and a thrilling climax.
As PSV look ahead, attention will turn to maintaining their domestic dominance and making a deeper impact in European competitions. But for now, the club and its fans can revel in the glory of another hard-fought and well-deserved Eredivisie crown.
