Alexander Isak Joins Liverpool in Stunning £125m British Record Transfer

Liverpool have secured the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a deal worth £125 million, setting a new Premier League transfer record. With add-ons and solidarity payments, Newcastle expect the package to rise as high as £130m, making this the most expensive transfer in English football history.

The 25-year-old Swedish striker completed his Liverpool medical on deadline day before signing a six-year contract. He will wear the prestigious No. 9 shirt at Anfield, becoming the club’s new focal point in attack. The transfer was officially announced just hours after the summer window closed, capping off one of the most dramatic sagas of the market.

Liverpool Outbid Rivals to Land Isak

Liverpool had a £110m bid rejected in August but persisted with negotiations. Their final offer of £125m was enough to convince Newcastle, despite the Magpies’ reluctance to sell their star forward. The deal surpasses Chelsea’s £106m purchase of Enzo Fernández in January 2023 and Liverpool’s own £116m move for Florian Wirtz earlier this summer.

This record-breaking transfer pushes Liverpool’s total spending past £400m for the window, signaling their ambition to defend the Premier League title and compete for European glory.

Isak on joining Liverpool

“I feel amazing.

“It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

Isak’s Newcastle Legacy

Isak leaves St James’ Park after three outstanding seasons, where he cemented his reputation as one of the best strikers in the Premier League. Since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022, he scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including 54 in the league. Last season, his 23 Premier League goals placed him second only to Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race.

Now, the two will line up together at Liverpool, forming what could be the most dangerous attacking partnership in Europe.

Newcastle’s Response

While losing Isak is a huge blow, Newcastle had already moved to strengthen their squad. Eddie Howe’s side brought in German forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart and secured the £50m signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford. Even so, replacing Isak’s goal output will be a major challenge.

What Isak Brings to Liverpool

Standing at 6ft 4in with pace, technical quality, and an instinctive eye for goal, Isak fits perfectly into Jürgen Klopp’s high-pressing system. Liverpool fans will expect him to make an immediate impact as he links up with Salah, Darwin Núñez, and Wirtz in a fearsome frontline.

Speaking after his unveiling, Isak expressed his excitement about joining Liverpool and his determination to win trophies at Anfield. With his proven scoring record and ability to thrive under pressure, the Swedish international looks set to become a defining figure in the Premier League 2025/26 season.
