Barcelona Sacks Xavi, Hansi Flick Set to Take Over as New Coach

Barcelona announced on Friday, May 24, that they’ve parted ways with their manager, Xavi, just weeks after extending his contract. In their statement, the club confirmed that Xavi won’t be continuing as head coach for the 2024-25 season, and his final game will be an away match against Sevilla on Sunday.

Barcelona said they would like to “thank Xavi for his work as a coach” since taking charge in 2021.

Xavi Statement on Social Media

“It is never easy to leave the club of your life, but I am very proud after two and a half years at the head of a dressing room that has been like a second family,”

“From Sunday I will be just one more Barca fan, in the stands”

“Because before being a player or a coach I am a Barcelona fan and I only want the best for the club in my life, which will always have me at its disposal”

Barcelona will finish the season second in LaLiga, behind champions Real Madrid. Xavi will stay in charge for the final game against Sevilla, with the team trailing their rivals by 12 points with one game left.

Barcelona’s Champions League run ended in the quarter-finals against Paris St-Germain. Over his 141 games as manager, Xavi led the team to 89 wins, achieving a 63% win ratio.

Sevilla Boss Criticizes Barcelona’s Treatment of Xavi

“I shouldn’t say this, but how badly Barcelona treats its legends. What a bad streak,”

“With Koeman, with Messi, with Xavi now – how bad. I wish clubs treated their legends well. That would be fantastic. Xavi is a legend of the club.”
