Ilkay Gündogan is set to rejoin Manchester City on a free transfer, just a year after departing for Barcelona. The 33-year-old, who captained City to a treble in 2023, will sign a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
After just one season at Barcelona, Gündogan is returning to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, having reportedly been informed that he isn’t part of Flick’s plans. Barcelona is also looking to reduce their wage bill to accommodate new signings.
Barcelona has an abundance of No. 10 players, with Dani Olmo joining a group that includes Pedri, Fermín López, and Pablo Torre.
Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong. Although his contract was initially set to run until 2025, an automatic one-year extension kicked in after he played over 60% of the games last season. However, Gündogan has agreed to forgo the salary for his remaining two seasons, saving Barcelona around €40 million.
