The long-running uncertainty surrounding FIFA World Cup 2026 broadcast rights in India has finally been resolved. With the tournament set to begin on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Zee Entertainment has secured exclusive television and digital rights for Indian audiences.
The agreement was completed only days before the opening match, ending months of speculation over where fans would be able to watch the biggest World Cup ever staged.
Zee Lands Exclusive FIFA Rights
The deal extends beyond the 2026 tournament. Zee’s agreement with FIFA covers several major competitions through 2034, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, the FIFA World Cup 2030 and other global events under FIFA’s umbrella.
The rights process attracted significant attention within the Indian sports media industry. FIFA reportedly reduced its initial valuation after broadcasters showed caution over the asking price. While several major networks explored the opportunity, Zee ultimately emerged as the successful bidder, strengthening its growing presence in sports broadcasting.
Where to Watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India
All 104 matches of the tournament will be available on Zee’s UNITE8 Sports network.
The broadcaster has launched dedicated English and Hindi channels in both standard-definition and high-definition formats to cover the competition. Digital viewers can watch every match live on ZEE5, which will also provide tournament coverage across multiple languages.
For Indian football fans, this marks a change from the previous World Cup. The 2022 edition in Qatar was broadcast on Sports18 and streamed through JioCinema, while the 2026 tournament moves entirely to Zee’s platforms.
Match Timings and Viewing Challenges
Unlike Qatar 2022, which offered several convenient evening kick-off times for Indian audiences, the North American tournament presents a different challenge.
With matches spread across three host countries and multiple time zones, many fixtures will begin during late-night or early-morning hours in India. Several high-profile matches are expected to kick off at 1:30 AM IST or 4:30 AM IST, particularly those played on the west coast of North America and in Mexico.
As a result, on-demand replays, match highlights and condensed coverage are likely to become important viewing options for supporters unable to follow games live.
A New-Look World Cup
The 2026 edition will be the largest in the tournament’s history. FIFA has expanded the competition from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the total number of matches to 104.
Sixteen host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico will stage games during the month-long tournament. The expanded format promises more nations, more fixtures and a longer route to the final.
For viewers in India, the viewing options are now clear. Every match of FIFA World Cup 2026 will be available through UNITE8 Sports on television and ZEE5 online, ensuring complete access to the tournament from the opening match on June 11 through to the final.
