Anthony Gordon Joins Barcelona in €80 Million Deal
BARCELONA: Anthony Gordon walked onto the Camp Nou pitch wearing Barcelona colours for the first time on Thursday evening, holding up the No. 11 shirt while thousands of fans gathered inside the stadium. The transfer had been building for weeks. Barcelona finally got their man.
The Catalan club confirmed the signing of the England winger from Newcastle United on a five-year contract in a deal reportedly worth around €80 million including add-ons. Gordon becomes one of Hansi Flick’s first major attacking signings ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Barcelona’s sporting department pushed aggressively to complete the move before pre-season. Flick wanted another direct winger alongside Lamine Yamal, and the club viewed Gordon as one of the few wide players in Europe capable of matching Barcelona’s intensity without the ball.
Gordon’s Numbers Convinced Barcelona
This was not a glamour signing based on hype alone. Gordon earned it.
The 25-year-old scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists for Newcastle across all competitions last season. In the Premier League, he created 63 chances and completed more successful dribbles than any Newcastle player. Only Bukayo Saka and Mohamed Salah produced more goal contributions among English wingers in the league.
Barcelona’s scouts closely tracked his performances during Newcastle’s Champions League campaign, particularly his display against Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park, where his relentless pressing unsettled PSG’s back line all night.
One senior Barcelona official described Gordon internally as “a winger built for modern football.”
Gordon Calls Barcelona Move a Dream
Gordon looked emotional during his unveiling. He admitted the transfer became impossible to ignore once Barcelona made contact.
“Barcelona is one of the biggest clubs in football,” Gordon said during the presentation. “When you grow up watching this club and then they call you personally, it changes everything. I wanted to be here.”
He also thanked Newcastle supporters directly.
“I’ll always appreciate what Newcastle did for me. The fans supported me from day one and helped me become the player I am now.”
Newcastle Lose a Key Player
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe never wanted to lose Gordon. That much became obvious during the final weeks of negotiations.
“He’s been outstanding for us,” Howe said earlier this month. “His energy, his mentality and his quality are very difficult to replace.”
That is the challenge Newcastle now face.
Gordon had become the heartbeat of their attack. He stretched defences, carried the ball through pressure and set the tempo in transition. His departure leaves a major gap on the left side, even if the transfer fee gives Newcastle room to rebuild.
Barcelona, meanwhile, believe they have signed a player entering his peak years rather than chasing a fading superstar. That feels important.
The club has spent the last few seasons trying to move away from expensive nostalgia. Gordon represents something different – intensity, aggression and consistency. Exactly the kind of winger Flick wanted.
