Atlético Madrid has signed Argentine striker Julián Álvarez from Manchester City in a landmark transfer worth up to €95 million (£82 million). Álvarez, a key player in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, joins on a six-year contract. The deal marks a significant addition for Diego Simeone’s squad, as they bolster their attacking options.
Julián Álvarez has been a key player for Manchester City, making 103 appearances over two seasons since joining from River Plate in 2022. The 24-year-old Argentine, a World Cup winner, has enjoyed a successful stint in Manchester, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
Last season, Álvarez played in 54 games across all competitions, more than any other City player, though 15 of those were as a substitute. He scored 19 goals, surpassing his expected goals (xG) of 17.5, and provided 13 assists, second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s 17.
Pep Guardiola on Alvarez Departure:
“He wants to leave and Atletico (Madrid) is a top club, so it’s okay. Good luck to Juli, we loved him, we won everything. I really wish him all the best”
Álvarez’s move to Atlético Madrid now marks a club-record sale for City.
Atlético Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone, has been on the hunt for a new center forward ever since Álvaro Morata’s move to AC Milan last month.
In addition, the club has struck a deal to bring in midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea, as Simeone aims to strengthen his squad for the upcoming season.
